Testimony from 34 of the 36 prosecution witnesses has been completed in a corruption case against former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed over allegations of acquiring assets beyond his known sources of income.
On Wednesday, 12 witnesses testified before Dhaka Special Judge Court-5 Judge Abdullah Al Mamun. As Benazir is absconding, they could not be cross-examined on his behalf. The court fixed November 5 for the next hearing.
The witnesses included officials from several banks, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), the Public Works Department and the Special Security and Protection Battalion, as well as a former joint secretary of the Dhaka Boat Club.
The court took cognisance of the charge sheet on March 8 and issued an arrest warrant against Benazir. Charges were framed against him on May 3, paving the way for trial.
The ACC filed the case on December 15, 2024, accusing him of acquiring assets beyond known sources of income, concealing asset information and money laundering.
According to the charge sheet, the investigation found assets worth Tk 15.68 crore against declared assets of a lower value. After calculating his legitimate income and expenses, the ACC alleged that he had acquired Tk 11.04 crore in assets beyond his known sources of income.
The charge sheet further alleged that he concealed the sources and ownership of the funds and transferred or invested them through bank accounts and business entities.
