Jail Killing Day will be observed today (Tuesday) marking 51 years since four prominent national leaders were murdered inside Dhaka Central Jail, one of the most chilling political assassinations in the country's history.
Syed Nazrul Islam, Tajuddin Ahmad, Captain M Mansur Ali and AHM Qamaruzzaman, four of the closest associates of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and key figures in the Liberation War and the Mujibnagar government, were shot dead inside the prison in the early hours of November 3, 1975.
Their assassination came less than three months after Bangabandhu and most of his family members were killed on by a group of army officers August 15, 1975.
Following the political upheaval when Khondaker Mushtaq took power declaring martial law, the four leaders were arrested and detained in prison.
Their killing behind prison walls, where the state had a legal obligation to ensure their safety, remains a dark chapter in the country's political and constitutional history.
