A Kenyan court on Friday (November 6) sentenced religious leader Paul Mackenzie to 200 years in prison for the deaths of 190 children and one adult who were allegedly forced to starve themselves to death on his orders.

Judge Diana Kavedza handed down 100 years for murder by starvation and another 100 years for direct homicide. Mackenzie led the Good News International Church and reportedly urged followers to fast to reach heaven before the end of the world.

The victims' bodies were found in shallow graves and latrines in Shakahola Forest. Some were allegedly buried alive, while accomplices beat and restrained those who tried to eat or drink.

Mackenzie denied forcing his followers to starve, but the court rejected his defence. Twenty-eight accomplices were also sentenced to prison terms ranging from 10 to 160 years. His lawyer, Lawrence Obonyo, said they would appeal.

Authorities recovered 448 bodies from Shakahola Forest, while Mackenzie faces a separate case over 52 other deaths.
