The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has dismissed national team head coach Hossam Hassan, a prominent figure during Egypt's recent World Cup campaign, citing a negative impact on the team's image.

Hassan’s dismissal follows a recent three-match ban imposed by FIFA for criticising refereeing decisions during Egypt's dramatic 3-2 loss to Argentina in the World Cup round of 16. Egyptian forward Mostafa Ziko also received a five-match FIFA ban in relation to the same match.

In a statement, the EFA stated that the decision to terminate Hassan's contract was based on his "negative impact on the positive image of the team," emphasizing that maintaining team stability remains a top priority.

Hassan's tenure, which began in 2024 as the first former player to coach the national side, was recently marked by mounting controversies. While rumours of a rift with star player Mohamed Salah circulated, Egyptian media reports suggest personal issues and public disputes played a significant role in his sacking.

Last week, Egypt's Supreme Council for Media Regulation took the unprecedented step of banning Hassan from all media appearances following reports of a violent domestic altercation at a North Coast hotel involving his current wife, ex-wife, and children. Hassan reportedly collapsed during the incident, which required police intervention.

The EFA has immediately appointed Ali Maher, the current head coach of Egyptian Premier League side Ceramica Cleopatra, as Hassan's successor. Maher faces an immediate challenge with Egypt, currently atop Group B, scheduled to play Malawi in home-and-away 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers on November 13 and 17.
