Over 31 lakh taxpayers submit e-returns amid strong participation from expatriates

Nearly 31.88 lakh taxpayers have already submitted their income tax returns for the 2025-26 fiscal year through e-return system of National Board of Revenue's (NBR) with 45.53 lakh taxpayers registered so far. 
Under a special directive, online e-return filing has been made compulsory for all individual taxpayers, except senior citizens aged 65 or above, physically disabled or specially-abled taxpayers, 
Bangladeshi nationals living abroad, legal representatives filing on behalf of deceased taxpayers, and foreign nationals working in Bangladesh filed the tax returns. The e-return system was officially launched on August 4, 2025, by Economic Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed through the NBR portal.
Taxpayers can register easily by sending their passport number, National ID number, email address, and other details to [email protected]. OTPs and registration links are then sent via email, enabling them to submit their returns online. 
So far, about 5,000 expatriates have successfully registered, and 3,300 have filed their 2025-26 income tax returns from abroad.
On average, around 100 expatriate taxpayers contact NBR daily via email for assistance with e-return filing.
The participation of expatriate Bangladeshis, along with other taxpayers, has significantly encouraged NBR's digital services initiative. The board has requested all individual taxpayers to file their 2025-26 income tax returns through the e-return system by January 31, 2026.
