Three arrested over 'gang-rape' on moving bus 

TANGAIL, Jan 16: Police have arrested three people, including a bus driver and his helper, over allegations that a college student was gang-raped overnight on a moving bus on the Jamuna Bridge-Tangail-Dhaka highway.

The arrests were made on Thursday afternoon from the Karteria underpass area of the highway. The arrestees are bus driver Md Altaf, 25, helper Md Sagar, 24, and the driver's associate Md Rabbi, 21.

According to Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Madhupur-Elenga Highway Police Station Md Sharif, the incident began around 11:30 pm on Wednesday. The 26-year-old student of the Philosophy Department of Mirpur Government Bangla College had boarded a Savar Paribahan bus from the Radio Colony area of Dhaka, intending to travel to Ashulia.

At the time, there were two other passengers on the bus. After they disembarked, the driver, helper and their associate allegedly restrained the student, robbed her of gold ornaments, cash and a mobile phone, and then drove the bus to various locations throughout the night, during which the alleged assault took place. Police also said the suspects recorded videos of the incident.

The OC said the victim, along with the arrested suspects and the bus, has been handed over to Tangail Sadar Police Station for further legal proceedings.
