GHORAGHAT, DINAJPUR, Jan 16: Police came under attack by a group of locals while conducting a special operation against gambling and illegal drugs in Ghoraghat Upazila on Wednesday evening. To control the situation, police fired one blank round. At least six people, including police officers, were injured.
The raid took place around 5:30 pm at an abandoned plot near the Kartoya River ferry ghat in Kulanandpur under Bulakipur Union, based on a tip-off about illegal gambling and drug activities.
Led by ASP A.N.M. Niamat Ullah, officers found about 100-110 people forming a mob, obstructing the operation and throwing bricks and sticks. Injured officers were treated at Ghoraghat Upazila Health Complex.
Five people were arrested, including Altaf Hossain, 45, Md Ranjum Mia, 38, Rafiqul Islam, 50, Md Maynul Islam, 52, and Md Sadekul Islam, 50. Police recovered 13 gambling tokens, two large rubber dice, Tk 4,800 in cash, four button phones, one smartphone, and five bottles of phensidyl (500 ml), valued at around Tk 10,000.
ASP Niamat Ullah said the area has long been a hub for organized crime and similar operations will continue.
Two cases were filed-one for attacking police and another for gambling and drugs-naming the arrested individuals and around 100-110 unidentified suspects.
