1,87,603 police personnel to be deployed in polls: IGP

A total of 1,87,603 police personnel will be deployed across the country to ensure security during the 13th national parliamentary election, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam said.

The IGP made the announcement while responding to journalists at a press conference titled “Overall Law and Order Situation Ahead of the National Parliamentary Election” held at Police Headquarters Media Centre on Tuesday.

He said,“Any weapon is a threat. Besides, weapons also enter the country through various means. We have taken all kinds of measures to counter this,” when asked about personal firearms looted from police stations.

Regarding the submission of licensed firearms, IGP said that following a directive from the Ministry of Home Affairs, owners have so far deposited 27,995 legal weapons.

He added that the number of firearms yet to be submitted is not significant, noting that some owners may be abroad and have kept their weapons locked in lockers.

The IGP said strict restrictions on licensed firearms were imposed to ensure that the election is held in a free, fair and peaceful manner. “All necessary steps have been taken so that voting can take place peacefully and in a festive atmosphere,” he said.

Outlining the security arrangements, he said a three-tier security system will be implemented with increased use of technology. “CCTV cameras have been installed in 90 percent of polling centres. Body cameras will be used at risky centres, and superintendents of police will deploy drones as part of the security measures,” he added.
