Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has deployed 26,515 police members across the capital to ensure tight security during the national election and referendum, DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media) Muhammad Talebur Rahman said on Wednesday.
Speaking to reporters at his office on Minto Road, Talebur said specialised units; including the Bomb Disposal Unit, SWAT, K-9 Unit and Crime Scene Unit, have been stationed in the field alongside regular security arrangements at polling centres.
He said DMP has adopted comprehensive security measures for the polls, deploying striking forces, mobile teams and reserve units throughout the city.
Police have also intensified patrols and set up additional checkposts in different parts of the capital to maintain law and order, he added.
“There is no specific threat, but we are on the highest alert. We expect the election to be held in a peaceful and fair atmosphere,” Talebur said.
Urging voters to cast their ballots without fear, he assured that adequate security has been ensured at polling centres. “Police are by your side,” he said.
Responding to a query, the DMP spokesperson said law enforcement agencies are fully prepared and maintaining strict vigilance across the city.
