Bangladesh Chapter of the SAARC Journalist Forum (SJF) has congratulated Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Tarique Rahman on the party’s sweeping victory in the country’s 13th parliamentary election held on Thursday.

In a joint statement, SJF Bangladesh Chapter President Nasir Al Mamoon and General Secretary Shiabur Rahman (Shihab) extended their heartfelt felicitations also to the leaders, activists and supporters of BNP for securing a decisive public mandate.

"This victory is a reflection of Tarique Rahman's uncompromising leadership in the fight for the restoration of people's voting rights and democracy. The people of the country have expressed full confidence in his leadership through the ballot," they said.

They expressed hope that the new government under him would work toward consolidating democratic institutions, ensuring freedom of expression, strengthening media independence and promoting inclusive development.

The SJF leaders further expressed their expectation that the incoming leadership would continue to uphold Bangladesh’s commitments to regional cooperation, particularly within the framework of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) and foster constructive engagement with neighbouring countries to promote peace, stability and shared prosperity in South Asia.

They wished the new government success and Tarique Rahman good health and long life.

Bangladesh Chapter of SAARC Journalist Forum reaffirmed its commitment to responsible journalism, regional collaboration and constructive dialogue in support of democratic values and sustainable development.
