Murikata onion farming on the rise in Gopalganj

Published : Wednesday, 25 February, 2026 at 12:00 AM
GOPALGANJ, Feb 24: The cultivation of 'Murikata' onions is expanding every year in Gopalganj, driven by the attractive prices farmers are receiving in the market. This growing profitability has sparked increased interest among local growers.
According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), favourable market rates are the primary reason farmers are shifting their focus to this variety. The department is also actively motivating farmers and providing necessary support to further expand Murikata onion cultivation.
Traditionally, farmers in Gopalganj cultivated seedling onions, locally known as 'Hali' onions. However, the higher profitability of Murikata onions is convincing many to make the switch. The agriculture department is offering guidance and incentives to encourage this trend.
Farmers Hasan Sikdar and Abu Sayed Molla from Korpara Village in Sadar Upazila reported a harvest of between 100 and 120 maunds of onions per bigha of land. After covering their production costs, they are achieving a significant profit. Wholesalers are purchasing the onions directly from the fields, with prices ranging from Tk 1,600 to Tk 1,800 per maund, depending on quality. Encouraged by this year's success, both farmers plan to increase the land area dedicated to Murikata onions next season.
The expansion of onion farming is also generating local employment, particularly for women. Rupa Begum and Swapna Begum shared that they earn around Tk 250 per day by harvesting and cutting onions during the morning hours. This additional income is providing crucial support for their families and improving their financial stability.
Dr. Md. Mamunur Rahman, Deputy Director of the DAE, confirmed that farmers are being provided with both incentives and technical assistance to promote Murikata onion cultivation further. This year, the agriculture department reported that onions were cultivated on 4,130 hectares of land across Gopalganj District.
