'Early preparedness can reduce loss of lives, properties'

GAIBANDHA, Mar 6: Speakers at a function here unequivocally  said, early preparedness about disaster could reduce loss of lives and properties in disaster-prone areas. 

If people of disaster-prone areas are not made aware about disaster  in advance, they are more likely to be harmed. Their lives and properties might be affected seriously. Taking this in view, it should be wise to bring the people of disaster-prone areas under advance preparedness activity regarding disaster to help them save from disaster related harmful activity, they also said. 

They made the comments while they were addressing an inception workshop of a project entitled Jamuna River Sustainable Management Project-1, Disaster Risk Financing Component-3 held in the conference room of the deputy commissioner (DC)  of the town here on Wednesday afternoon. 

In cooperation with district administration, The function was held at the initiative of Gana Unnayan Kendra (GUK), a local NGO working across the country. 

DC Muhammad Masuder Rahman Mollah attended the function and addressed it as the chief guest. 

A team of high officials from donor part including disaster risk finance specialist Sumon Ahsanul Islam, head of resilient innovation  unit, policy programme officer Neegar Dil Nahar, head of insurance Nurul Amin addressed the function as the resource persons. 

District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Md. Shafiqul Islam and other district level officers were present on the occasion. 

In the briefing , the GUK official said, WFP would implement the project in 35 unions of Sadar, Sundarganj, Saghata and Fulchhari upazilas  in the district in partnership with GUK for the term of one year from January 2026 to December 2026. 

The GUK official sought whole-hearted cooperation of all concerned to make the project a grand success in the district.
