Home Minister and BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed on Thursday said the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) would serve as the main platform for discussing all national issues aimed at transforming Bangladesh into a strong democratic state.

Speaking to journalists after attending the maiden session of 13th Jatiya Sangsad at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, the senior BNP leader said the parliament would be the centre of all forms of political debate and discussion.

“All issues will be discussed in parliament. It will be the centre of every kind of discussion,” he said.

Salahuddin Ahmed said his party wants to maintain a democratic culture that will strengthen Bangladesh’s democratic institutions.

“We want to turn Bangladesh into a democratically powerful country by continuing the practice of democratic culture, where the country and the constitution will be reformed through democratic processes,” he said.

He also expressed hope that the country could build a fascism-free Bangladesh through the continued practice of democracy, in line with the aspirations of the martyrs of the Bangladesh Liberation War and the July Mass Uprising of 2024, as well as the expectations of the people.

Responding to a question about the walkout staged by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami lawmakers before the President’s speech, he said the move followed parliamentary procedure.

“They walked out following due procedure. It is nothing new or unprecedented. It is also a democratic practice,” he added.
