The Department of Consumer Rights Protection has seized a huge amount of petrol and octane that were being illegally stored in a cowshed in the Chinakhara area of Sujanagar upazila of Pabna.
In a special drive, about 1,500 liters of fuel illegally stored in the cowshed of the house of Santoo Islam in Chinakhara Bazar, was seized on Saturday.
Santoo Islam was fined Tk 25,000 on charge of keeping those illegally.
The recovered fuel was later sold to the locals at government-fixed prices.
The head of the drive and assistant director of the Pabna Consumer Rights Protection Department, Mahmud Hasan Rony confirmed that the operation aimed to curb illegal fuel stockpiling amid fears of shortages caused by the ongoing war in the Middle East.
It was a routine surveillance and a total of Tk 90,000 in fines was collected from six establishments across four markets, including Ataikula and Chinakhara, where petrol, diesel, and octane were being sold at excessive prices, Mahmud Hasan added.
