At least 10 people, including the driver and his assistant, were injured after a passenger bus crashed into a roadside tree on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway in Mirsarai on Saturday.
The accident occurred around noon in the Sonapahar BSRM Bypass area under Jorarganj Union.
According to eyewitnesses, the Fire Service and Highway Police, the Tisha Paribahan bus was travelling from Dhaka to Chattogram when it attempted to overtake a covered van. During the manoeuvre, part of the van became lodged under the bus, causing the driver to lose control before the vehicle slammed into a roadside tree. The front portion of the bus was badly damaged.
Local residents, with assistance from firefighters, rescued the injured passengers and sent them to nearby hospitals. Traffic on the Chattogram-bound lane was disrupted briefly before police and fire service personnel cleared the damaged bus and fallen tree, restoring normal vehicular movement.
Baraiyarhat Fire Service Station Officer Joynul Abedeen Titas said a rescue unit and an ambulance were dispatched immediately after receiving the report.
Jorarganj Highway Police Sergeant Nadim said the covered van involved in the incident fled the scene, and an investigation is underway.
