Police arrested seven individuals for questioning following a clash between two rival groups of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) supporters over illegal soil cutting in Feni’s Chhagalnaiya upazila early Sunday.
The incident occurred around 3:00 AM in Contractor Mosque area of Pathannagar union, leaving one individual dead and two others seriously injured.
The arrested were identified as Kamrul Hasan Zahid, 30, Ismail Hossain Munna, 20, Kamruzzaman Faruk, 28, Md Israfil, 26, Azmirul Islam, 27, Abdur Rahman Rocky, 25 and Fayez Mohammad Mahadi, 30, from different areas of Chhagalnaiya and neighbouring Mirsarai upazila.
The deceased was identified as Hona Mia, 37, son of Abul Kashem, a resident of Purba Shilua village in the upazila. He was known locally as a Jubo Dal activist.
The injured were identified as Alauddin Sujon, 30, son of Jane Alam, and Nur Alam, 40, both residents of the same village and reportedly involved in BNP politics. They are currently receiving treatment at Feni General Hospital.
According to police sources, tensions had been escalating between two groups of BNP supporters for several days over the cutting and transportation of soil from agricultural land, despite administrative restrictions.
The dispute eventually turned violent late Saturday night, leading to a clash between the rival groups. Three people sustained serious injuries during the violence and were rushed to Feni General Hospital, where doctors declared Hona Mia dead upon arrival.
Confirming the incident, Chhagalnaiya Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Md Kamrul Islam said that further investigation into the incident is underway.
