The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has undertaken a comprehensive set of initiatives to reduce water logging in the capital during the upcoming monsoon season. As part of the plan, authorities have identified 33 water logging-prone hotspots and initiated urgent measures to improve drainage in those areas. The initiative also includes cleaning key box culverts within a month, installing new (new) pumps and constructing additional drainage outlets.

The announcement was made on Wednesday during the inauguration of a month-long programme aimed at mitigating water logging across Dhaka. DSCC Administrator Abdus Salam said, "We have already identified 33 vulnerable hotspots. Immediate steps are being taken to ensure faster water drainage so that public suffering during rainfall can be minimized."

According to DSCC officials, the corporation currently oversees 24 canals and four important box culverts. However, due to years of inadequate maintenance, these culverts have accumulated waste and debris, significantly obstructing water flow. As a result, even light rainfall often leads to water logging in many parts of the city.

The administrator stated, "From today, we have launched a one-month special campaign (drive). Insha'Allah, all four box culverts will be fully cleaned within this timeframe." He also acknowledged that although tenders had been issued in the past, the work was not properly executed. "This time, we will ensure strict implementation and accountability," he added.

To strengthen technical capacity, DSCC has also introduced six new portable pumps. Abdus Salam explained, "Previously, the two existing pumps were insufficient to quickly remove accumulated water. That is why we have added six more pumps. Even if water accumulates, it can now be removed much faster."
