The 96th birth anniversary of legendary journalist, columnist, and leftist political leader Nirmal Sen will be observed across the country today (Monday, August 3) in a befitting manner. Born on August 3 in 1930 in Gopalganj, Nirmal Sen is remembered as one of the pioneers of courageous, ethical, and people-oriented journalism. Throughout his life, he remained uncompromising in his fight for democracy, social justice, secularism, and press freedom.
To mark the day, Nirmal Sen Memorial Sangsad, different educational institutions, journalists’ organizations, and socio-cultural bodies will arrange various programmes, including commemorative discussion, tribute-paying, and prayer.
Known by his pen name ‘Aniket,’ Nirmal Sen served as an assistant editor of Daily Ittefaq and editor of Dainik Bangla. He was also founding president of Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ). His famous slogan, “Shabhabik Mrittur Guarantee Chai” (We Want the Guarantee of a Natural Death), continues to inspire movements for human rights and democratic values.
