Sundarbans crocodile kills goat 

Public panic has gripped localities around the Sundarbans following the killing of a goat in a crocodile attack on the bank of a canal in the Dhangmari area under the Chandpai Range of the eastern part of the mangrove forest region.

The crocodile attack took place at around 10am on Saturday (Aug 1).

A video of the attack was recorded by passengers on a passing boat and later went viral on social media.

According to the Forest Department and local sources, the goat was grazing on the bank of the Dhangmari canal when a large crocodile suddenly emerged from the water. The crocodile attacked the goat, dragged it into the canal, and tore it apart underwater.

Following the incident, the Forest Department issued a warning to residents living near the Sundarbans, urging them to remain alert.

Howlader Md. Azad Kabir, officer-in-charge of the Karamjal Wildlife Breeding and Tourism Center in the eastern Sundarbans, said the incident was a rare case of a crocodile killing a goat in a forest-adjacent area. He said the department warned local residents after reviewing the viral video.

Sundarbans East Forest Division Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Md. Rezaul Karim Chowdhury said people living along canals and rivers near the Sundarbans have been advised to exercise caution while moving in the area.

He also urged residents to ensure that domestic animals do not enter areas close to the forest boundary and to remain vigilant to prevent similar incidents in the future.
