DUCSU warns against repeal of key ordinances, urges govt to respect people’s mandate

Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) has strongly criticized the government’s proposal to repeal several important ordinances, including those on enforced disappearances, the National Human Rights Commission, the Police Commission, Supreme Court judge appointments, the national referendum and anti-corruption measures.

In a statement released Friday signed by DUCSU Vice President (VP) Shadik Kayem, General Secretary (GS) SM Farhad and Assistant General Secretary (AGS) Mohiuddin Khan, said these ordinances were enacted to implement institutional reforms following the July revolution and reflect the public’s support, as expressed through a decisive “Yes” in the recent referendum.

“Repealing these ordinances would disregard the people’s mandate and undermine years of struggle for democratic reforms,” the statement warned.

Highlighting country’s history of political repression, DUCSU noted that past authoritarian regimes subjected citizens and political leaders to torture, harassment, disappearances and crossfire killings.

The statement expressed concern that repealing the ordinances could pave the way for the return of such practices.

DUCSU called on the government to prioritize public interest, uphold institutional reforms and avoid double standards.

“History shows that no ruler can survive indefinitely by defying the people’s verdict,” the statement said, urging immediate action to honour the sacrifices of July revolution martyrs and protect the nation’s democratic progress.
