Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) collected Tk 500 each from first-year students as a ‘Centre for Digital Transformation (CDT) Fee’ in violation of University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations, according to a UGC assessment team.

The UGC budget assessment report said a total of Tk 697,000 was collected under the fee. The team recommended that the university take necessary measures over the collection.

The UGC team conducted an assessment of the university’s revised budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year and the original budget for 2026-27 on November 16 and 17, 2025.

According to the report, the university has no provision to collect fees from students in the name of any office, centre or department and spend the money under such heads.

Student Md Sabur Bhuiyan said first-year students were charged an additional Tk 500 beyond the prescribed admission fee, placing an unnecessary financial burden on them.

Asked about the unauthorised fee, acting Registrar Prof Ferdous Rahman said the UGC had previously raised objections to the collection.

“At a meeting of the admission committee, it was decided that we would no longer collect the fee,” he said.

Asked what would happen to the money already collected, he said it would be deposited into the university’s fund.
