A major controversy has bubbled-up as a student, Nazmul Hasan Siam, stands accused of studying at both Dhaka University (DU) and Jahangirnagar University (JU) at the same time.
Nazmul Hasan Siam, 2023-24 session student of Mass Communication and Journalism (MCJ) department student at DU. He is also registered as a residential student at Jasimuddin hall. The same student is allegedly affiliated at Journalism and Media Studies (JMS) departemt at JU.
When asked about these allegations he told media that he used separate HSC certificates from school in 2022 and madrasha 2023 to bypass admission rules.
While registered at JU, he also completed a semester at DU with a 2.97 CGPA, violating University Grants Commission’s (UGC) regulations.
UGC maintains a strict prohibition against dual enrolment in public institutions. Following the discovery, administration at both universities expressed shock, describing the situation as highly irregular.
DU MCJ department chairperson Prof Dr Taiabur Rahman told media that Siam may face the permanent cancellation of his studentship for providing misleading information during the admission process.
He also described the situation as ‘abnormal’, warning that the student may face expulsion.
He noted that a formal written complaint would trigger an official investigation.
Meanwhile, JU JMS department chairperson, assistant professor Mridha Md Shiblee Noman, explained media that the dual enrolment surfaced via social media.
He clarified that since the student reportedly used two different certificates, the system could not easily detect the overlap. Typically, universities hold original documents to prevent such cases, but the use of separate credentials created an ‘extraordinary complication’ for university administrations.
