A battery-powered auto-rickshaw driver and his passenger were killed in a truck crash in the Jatrabari area of the capital Dhaka.
The two people killed in the incident around 2am on Saturday were rickshaw puller Firoz Ahmed, 50, and passenger Abul Kalam Dewan, 45, who was also a rickshaw puller, police said. An eyewitness named Md Khairul said that at around 1 am, he was sitting at a shop next to the Mirhajirbagh raw market and drinking tea. Then he saw a truck driving recklessly on the opposite road. 30 seconds later, the truck went in front and ran over an auto-rickshaw.
They immediately ran and pulled the auto-rickshaw driver and the passenger out from under the truck. They were taken to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in a life-threatening condition and declared dead by the doctor on duty, he said.
