Measles surge: A ticking time bomb for our children

The alarming resurgence of measles across the country demands urgent attention, swift action, and sustained public cooperation.Since March 15, the situation has escalated rapidly, with 7,610 suspected cases recorded, of which 929 have been confirmed.

Recent data from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) paints a troubling picture: Till Monday morning, 974 new patients with measles-like symptoms were identified, including 54 confirmed cases.

However, these are not mere numbers, but also represent a growing public health crisis disproportionately affecting the most vulnerable.

Particularly concerning is the fact that 82 percent of suspected patients are children under the age of five. This stark statistic underscores the urgency of the government's response and justifies the targeted focus of the ongoing "Emergency Measles-Rubella Vaccination Campaign." By prioritizing children aged 6 to 59 months, health authorities are undeniably addressing the demographics at greatest risk of severe complications.

The campaign commenced with 30 upazilas across 18 districts, expanding to 4 city corporations from April 12, and reaching nationwide coverage by May 3-reflects a strategic and necessary approach.

The point, however, the scale of the outbreak suggests that implementation must be both efficient and inclusive. With 5,470 patients hospitalized and 3,380 already discharged, the strain on healthcare facilities is fairly noticeable. Meanwhile, the death toll continues to climb, with 113 reported deaths showing measles symptoms since March 15, including 17 confirmed fatalities.

Measles outbreak is not a new phenomenon in Bangladesh. It is a highly contagious yet vaccine-preventable disease. And the fact that such an outbreak has resurfaced lay bare systemic gaps-whether in routine immunization coverage, public awareness, or healthcare delivery. While political blame-game has already begun, the priority now must be collective accountability and forward-looking solutions.

Encouragingly, the campaign includes not only vaccination but also the distribution of Vitamin A capsules, which are crucial in reducing measles-related complications. The decision to defer vaccination for currently ill children while still providing them with Vitamin A demonstrates a measured and medically sound approach.

Yet, success will depend not only on government initiatives but also on community participation. Parents must ensure their children receive vaccinations promptly. Misinformation and complacency must be actively countered through clear communication and grassroots engagement. In addition, our international partners such as UNICEF and the World Health Organization offers additional support and credibility to the campaign.

In conclusion, long-term resilience against measles will require strengthening routine immunization systems to prevent future outbreaks.

Let us not forget this is a race against time. With cases rising and young lives at stake, the nation must act decisively to contain the outbreak and rebuild trust in its public health protections.
