Guestroom harassment allegations surface at DU Qudrat-e-Khuda Hostel

Freshers at Dhaka University's Dr. Qudrat-e-Khuda Hostel have alleged they were subjected to 'guestroom' culture, marking the first such report since the political transition on August 5, 2024.

Students of the Institute of Leather Engineering and Technology claimed they were forced into late-night sessions under the guise of learning 'manners'.

Several 43rd-batch students, including Al Mosaddek, Khalid Abdullah, Mohammad Anas, Sabik Islam, Ibrahim and Monirul, stand accused of orchestrating these sessions.

Victims reported being held in rooms 1003, 1004, or the dining hall from 11:30 pm until as late as 2:30 am for the past four days.

One news student m, speaking anonymously, described the experience as extreme mental harassment, noting that Mosaddek allegedly made derogatory remarks about female classmates, referring to them as 'food for seniors'.

While some accused students denied the claims, with Ibrahim suggesting it was merely an 'introductory session' and Anas claiming he was at a private tuition, the allegations have sparked concern.

Witnesses noted the presence of senior students and some individuals identifying with Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, who reportedly told juniors to follow the orders of their immediate seniors.

Md. Ahsan Habib Imroz, Vice-president (VP) of the Zahurul Huq Hall Union, vowed to take the matter to the Vice-chancellor (VC).

Hostel Warden Dr. Md. Farhad Ali said that he was unaware of the specific incidents but promised a thorough investigation, asserting that such conduct would not be tolerated.

Historically, 'guestroom culture' involved physical and mental abuse by political cadres, a practice students hoped had ended following the July uprising.
