Several food shops at Jahangirnagar University (JU) remained closed on Wednesday night after a group of students staged protests over alleged misconduct by a JUCSU leader involving a shop employee.

The incident occurred around 7:30 PM at Battala area and reportedly stemmed from an incident the previous night.

JUCSU Health and Food Safety Secretary Husne Mobarak allegedly found a fly in a bowl of haleem at a campus food shop.

According to witnesses, he lost his temper, argued with a shop staff member and threw the bowl, causing hot haleem to spill onto the employee.

Following the incident, protesting students forced several shops to shut down, demanding action against those involved.

The situation briefly escalated into a verbal altercation between the protesters and JUCSU executive member Mohammad Ali Chishti at the scene.

A shop owner said, “Students pressured us to close our shops and businesses. Some students came and told us to shut down and we complied,” he added, requesting anonymity.

Denying the allegations, Husne Mobarak said, “I did not intentionally throw hot food at anyone. I only protested against unhygienic food conditions.”

Assistant Proctor Prof Abdur Razzak said, “The situation is now under control. The university authorities will hold a meeting with both parties on Thursday afternoon in an effort to resolve the issue.”
