3 sentenced to death in Jamalpur gang rape case

A Jamalpur court on Thursday sentenced three men to death and life imprisonment in a case filed over the abduction and gang rape of a woman tea vendor.

Jamalpur Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 Judge Muhammad Abdur Rahim delivered the verdict.

The convicts are Md Kalam, 50, Bulbul Ahmed, 45 and Md Ruk, 40, all residents of Pathalia Nowbhanga Char area in Jamalpur town. Among them, Bulbul Ahmed and Md Ruk are currently absconding.

According to the case statement, the victim used to sell tea and betel leaves at a small shop in front of Shah Jamal Mazar in the town. On the night of May 14, 2023, the convicts abducted her and gang raped her.

Later, when she fell seriously ill, these accused abandoned her in Foujdari area of the town and fled the scene.

Following the incident, the victim’s husband subsequently filed a case with the local police station.

Public prosecutor Fazlul Haque said that after a lengthy trial, the court sentenced each of the three convicts to death penalty along with life imprisonment and fined them Tk 2 lakh each. The court also ordered that the realised fine be paid to the victim.
