A Dhaka court on Monday sent Dhaka University (DU) Assistant Professor Sudip Chakraborty to jail in a case filed over the alleged abetment of a student's suicide.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ripon Hossain passed the order after rejecting his bail petition.

The accused was shown arrested in connection with the death of Munira Mahjabin Mimo, a student of the Theatre and Performance Studies Department (2019-20 session) at Dhaka University.

According to the case statement, police recovered the hanging body of Mimo from her residence in the capital’s Badda area on Sunday. A suicide note was also recovered from the scene.

On the same day, police detained Sudip Chakraborty following a case filed by the victim’s father with Badda Police Station, accusing him of instigating the suicide.

In the custody petition, police told the court that the victim had spoken with the accused over a video call late on April 25. Investigators said preliminary findings indicated possible involvement of the accused in abetment of suicide.

The petition further stated that the accused should be kept in custody for the sake of fair investigation, as verification of his identity and address was still underway. Police also indicated that they may seek remand for interrogation later.

Investigation officer and sub-inspector (SI) Kazi Iqbal Hossain moved for keeping the accused in custody until the completion of the probe.

Court sub-inspector (SI) Kamal Hossain confirmed that the accused was not produced before the court as there was no remand prayer and he was kept in the CMM court lock-up.

During the hearing, defence lawyer Ariful Mohammad sought bail, arguing that Sudip Chakraborty is a respected teacher and had no involvement in the incident, claiming the case was filed to harass him.
