Narayanganj-2 (Araihazar) MP Nazrul Islam Azad has stated that canals in Araihazar upazila, which have been degraded due to encroachment and pollution, will be restored to their original condition through excavation.
He made these remarks while inaugurating a canal excavation programme in the upazila on Tuesday afternoon.
Azad, also a joint organisational secretary of BNP’s Dhaka division, said the initiative has been taken to protect the environment and ensure public welfare.
“If the canals are re-excavated, waterlogging will be reduced and irrigation facilities for agriculture will improve,” he said.
He said that restoring the canals would help reduce environmental pollution, improve irrigation and support agricultural activities.
He also added that reviving the canals would also contribute to increasing natural fish production and benefit the local ecosystem.
Azad said the canal excavation program in Narayanganj district has begun with Araihazar as part of its first phase.
Narayanganj Deputy Commissioner (DC) Md Raihan Kabir chaired the program.
During the program, Superintendent of Police (SP) Mizanur Rahman Munshi, Araihazar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Asadur Rahman, Additional Superintendent of Police (Circle) Mehedi Islam and local BNP leaders and activists were present, among others.
