An outlawed Purba Banglar Communist Party leader was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Khulna's Dighalia upazila on Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Md Nasimul Gani, 45, a regional leader of the banned leftist outfit Purba Banglar Communist Party (Janayuddha) and a resident of the Farmaishkhana area in Dighalia.
According to police and eyewitnesses, the incident occurred between 11:30 AM and 12:00 PM in front of Nasimul's residence. He was returning home after having tea at a local stall when two assailants arriving in a van shot at him before fleeing the scene.
Locals rescued the critically injured Nasimul and rushed him to Khulna Medical College Hospital, where on-duty doctors declared him dead.
Dighalia Police Station Officer-in-Charge Khandakar Sanowar Hossain Masum said police recovered three bullet shells, three live rounds, and a pistol magazine from the scene.
Police confirmed that the victim faced multiple criminal charges, including four murder cases. Drives are currently underway to identify and arrest the killers, and legal action is being processed.
