At least five people, including a woman, were injured in a clash between two groups over establishing dominance in Jhaudia union of Kushtia Sadar upazila on Sunday. Police arrested two people following the incident.

The clash took place in the Udaypur and Mashpara areas around noon. Three of the injured received treatment at Kushtia 250-bed General Hospital. Additional police were deployed in the area to control the situation.

According to police, local residents and eyewitnesses, the two groups have been in a dispute over local dominance in the areas for about a month. Several clashes, attacks and incidents of vandalism have reportedly taken place during this period.

On Sunday, supporters of the Peshkar and Ripon groups allegedly attacked the house of Mannan Mondol, a supporter of Rabiul Mondol, with locally made weapons. Several houses were vandalised in the attack.

The injured were identified as Dalim, Marjina and Monowar, among others. Local residents rescued them and took them to the Kushtia General Hospital.

Dalim's husband, Mannan Mondol, alleged that members of the Peshkar and Ripon groups attacked their house while he was cutting bamboo. He also alleged that police were present during the attack.

Marjina Khatun said the attackers targeted them when there were no men at home. She said she required several stitches for injuries to her head.

Residential Medical Officer of Kushtia 250-bed General Hospital Dr Iqbal Hasan said three people came to the hospital following the clash and received necessary treatment.

Police said they were sent to the scene after receiving information about the clash and arrested two people. Their identities were not immediately known.

Islamic University Police Station Officer-in-Charge SM Mamunur Rashid said he was busy and would provide details later.
