Dhaka University (DU) authorities have relieved Associate Professor Dr Sudip Chakraborty from all academic responsibilities and activities.
The decision comes in the aftermath of the death of a student, Munira Mahjabin Mimo, from the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies, and Dr Sudip’s arrest in a case related to alleged abetment of her suicide.
In a notification signed by the department chairperson Kazi Tamanna Haque Sigma on Monday, it was stated that the department was deeply shocked by this untimely death of Mimo, an MA 2nd semester student of the 2024 session.
The statement further noted that following the incident and subsequent arrest of Dr Sudip Chakraborty by law enforcement, he has been sent to jail in connection with the case.
It said a special academic committee meeting held on 26 April decided to relieve Dr Sudip from all academic activities, including classes and examination-related duties, until the legal process is concluded.
DU authorities said the decision was taken in view of the ongoing judicial proceedings.
