Threats to govt will lead opposition’s own downfall: Ishraque Hossain

State Minister for Liberation War Affairs Ishraq Hossain issued a stern warning to the opposition on Wednesday, stating that any attempts to topple the government would be met with a decisive response on the streets.

Speaking during the 24th day of the first session of the 13th National Parliament, the minister addressed the House during a discussion on the motion of thanks for the President’s speech.

Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal presided over the session.

Ishraque Hossain asserted that the current government derives its legitimacy from a direct public mandate rather than past controversial election cycles. He emphasized that the administration stands firm against external pressure.

Addressing the Leader of the House, he said that the ruling party is prepared to take to the streets to defend the government, just as they did to establish voting rights and oust the previous regime.

The state minister criticized the opposition for what he described as a dual approach. While acknowledging their constructive speeches within the chamber, he accused opposition leaders of spreading "poisonous rhetoric" outside of Parliament.

He claimed this rhetoric is inciting unrest in educational institutions and leading to clashes between student organizations.

Referring to recent political developments, Ishraque noted that while the opposition leader initially reacted positively to the formation of a committee on the energy crisis, other leaders spent the following days inciting the public. He highlighted that some had even threatened to remove the government within 17 days.

The minister urged for a politics of peace rather than division, warning that creating instability would only benefit "fugitive fascists."

He reminded the House of the sacrifices made during the 2024 movement, stating that all parties must remain respectful to honor the martyrs.

He cautioned that if destabilizing forces return to power, those currently leading movements would face severe consequences.
