Labour rights in the age of automation

Dear Sir,

The Fourth Industrial Revolution has brought profound changes to the labour market, raising urgent concerns on this May Day 2026. While technological advancements have improved productivity and efficiency, they have also created uncertainty regarding job security, workers' rights, and social protection.

Automation and artificial intelligence are rapidly replacing traditional forms of labour, leaving many skilled workers vulnerable and displaced. This reflects a broader reality in which human labour is increasingly at risk in the face of mechanization. At the same time, the expansion of the gig economy has introduced a form of "digital servitude," where workers remain constantly connected without fixed working hours, job security, or adequate benefits.

Technological progress should not be opposed, but it must be directed toward human welfare. Governments and employers must ensure access to reskilling opportunities, modern labour laws, and a fair distribution of the benefits generated by automation.

May Day serves as a powerful reminder that the dignity and rights of workers must always be protected. A human-centered approach to development is essential to ensure a just and sustainable future for all.
