Seven people were arrested with various smuggled goods in separate raids by law enforcement agencies in two districts - Dinajpur and Habiganj, in two days.
GHORAGHAT, DINAJPUR: Police have arrested five members of an inter-district theft gang along with cash and a pickup van used for transporting cattle.
Ghoraghat-Hakimpur Assistant Superintendent of Police ANM Niamat Ullah said in a press briefing at Ghoraghat Police Station on Monday noon that a Shahiwal cow worth about Tk 1.30 lakh and a Friesian calf worth about Tk 80,000 were stolen from the cowshed of Mahabubul Alam Shipon in Nurpur Village of the upazila on the night of May 2. Later, a team led by Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ghoraghat Police Station (PS) Shahidul Islam and SI (Unarmed) Ahnaf Tahmid arrested Mahmudul Hasan Munna, 28, son of Saidur Rahman of Kashigari Madhyapara Village of the upazila. Later, based on the information provided by him, Kawsar Islam, 30, son of Saiful Islam of Singra Dakkhinpara Village of the upazila, was arrested.
The police arrested three more associates - Suvel Mia, 30, son of late Zahid Molla of Shekhalipara Village of the upazila, Al Rahid Apan, 25, son of Alamgir Hossain of Dakkhin Debipur Village, and Fahim Islam, 25, son of Faruk Islam of Belwa Nayandighi area.
HABIGANJ: Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Habiganj Battalion (55 BGB) in separate drives arrested two people and seized smuggled goods, cattle and vehicles worth about Tk 1.5 crore from the district.
According to BGB sources, based on a tip-off, the BGB members seized a huge quantity of Indian cumin seeds in a truck in the Muktijoddha Chattar area of Madhabpur Upazila early Monday and seized the truck as these goods did not have any valid documents.
On the same day, a patrol team of Teliapara BOP searched in a microbus in the same area and arrested two people along with Indian cumin seeds, 768 cans of Red Bull energy drinks and a car. The arrested are Shahed Mia, 25, of Tatikona Village in Chhatak Upazila and Ashraful, 20, of Barakhal Village in Doarabazar Upazila of Sunamganj District. Later, they were handed over to Madhabpur PS. Besides, three ownerless Indian cows were seized in a separate operation in Satchhari area of Chunarughat Upazila.
