Opposition Leader and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer, Dr Shafiqur Rahman, has reaffirmed his commitment to enforcing the outcome of the recent national referendum through movements both inside and outside of Parliament.

He made the declaration on Tuesday during a civic reception held at Shibukawa Welfare Center in Nagoya, organized by the local branch of Islamic Mission Japan.

The event drew a large number of the Bangladeshi diaspora from the Greater Aichi Prefecture, including community leaders, researchers, students, and professionals.

Expressing gratitude to expatriates, Dr Shafiqur lauded their role in resisting the previous "fascist" regime. He highlighted their efforts during the July mass uprising, specifically the "remittance shutdown" campaign, and acknowledged their continued support in stabilizing the national economy through increased remittances following the political change on August 5.

Regarding the 39 Bangladeshis imprisoned in the UAE, he pledged to work closely with the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare to secure their release.

On the issue of the recent referendum, the opposition leader asserted that the verdict must be implemented. "There is no country in the world where a referendum has failed; therefore, it will not fail in Bangladesh either," he stated.

He noted that approximately 70 percent of voters had cast their ballots in favor of the proposal. Dr Shafiqur argued that failing to implement this verdict would be an insult to every citizen and vowed that the opposition would continue its struggle to honor the people's mandate.

Drawing inspiration from the host nation, Dr Shafiqur described Japan as a true friend of Bangladesh. He expressed his vision of building a nation grounded in morality, advanced education, and scientific progress, modeled after Japan’s success.

He reiterated his commitment to working with all friendly nations to transform Bangladesh into a country free from corruption, poverty, and extrajudicial disappearances.

Addressing domestic economic concerns, Dr Shafiqur expressed deep anxiety over rising commodity prices caused by market syndicates and extortion. He urged the government to adopt a zero-tolerance policy against corruption and pledged to uproot the networks of extortionists that burden the public.

The opposition leader concluded by emphasizing accountability, stating that no one is above mistakes and that he remains open to constructive feedback.

He assured the audience that he would fulfill all necessary roles as the Leader of the Opposition to ensure an effective parliamentary system.

Special guests at the event included Jamaat Executive Council member Saiful Alam Khan Milon, MP, and the opposition leader’s foreign affairs adviser, Barrister Mir Ahmad Bin Quasem Arman, MP.
