PIROJPUR, May 5: With the fund of Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Mathbaria Municipality constructed an attractive two-storied fish market in Mathbaria Upazila headquarters of the district five years ago at a cost of Tk 9.20 crore.
But the market has not been opened yet for unknown reasons. As a result, the government is losing revenue and the common people are suffering much.
Small and marginal farmers sit on street to sell their products causing regular traffic jam in the upazila town.
Locals assume that due to complexities in the allocation of the 68 stalls in the fish market, the inauguration is being delayed.
After dissolution of the elected body of the municipality, the Upazila Nirbahi officer (UNO) took charge as the administrator of the municipality.
UNO Aklima Akhter said the market has been handed over to the upazila administration and a market management committee has already been formed. "Hopefully, we will inaugurate the market on priority basis very soon considering people's sufferings."
