A Netrokona court placed a madrasa teacher on a three-day remand on Thursday in a case filed over the rape of a student that resulted in her becoming seven months pregnant.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Mossina Islam passed the order after police produced the accused, Aman Ullah Sagar, before the court with a seven-day remand prayer.

Following a heated hearing, the court granted three days for interrogation, directing the police to produce him again on  May 10.

State counsel Advocate Nurul Kabir Rubel told the court that the incident has become a talk of the country. He alleged that a specific group has been spreading propaganda on social media to shield the accused, while the doctor who treated the victim has reportedly faced threats.

The lawyer further claimed that the accused himself had previously used social media to disseminate misleading information.

On the other hand, defense counsel Advocate Ziauddin Khan Zia moved a bail petition, arguing that an individual cannot be labeled a criminal based solely on an allegation. The court, however, rejected the bail plea and allowed the remand.

According to the case statement, the accused teacher had been violating the student for a long period by intimidation. The matter surfaced when the victim's family noticed physical changes and took her to a doctor, where tests confirmed she was seven months pregnant.

The victim’s family subsequently filed a case with Madan Police Station.

Following the outcry, the accused went into hiding but was eventually apprehended by RAB-14 from Mymensingh’s Gouripur on Wednesday morning.
