KMP steps up security in Khulna ahead of August 5 and 15

Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) has tightened security across the city ahead of August 5 and 15. Such measures were taken to prevent sudden flash marches or gatherings by banned Awami League.

Intelligence agencies have already compiled 60 influential leaders accused of inciting violence on Facebook or financing activities. However, police confirmed there is no risk of sabotage in the city. 

According to police sources, newly prepared list has been distributed to eight police stations and outposts across the metropolis. Instructions were delivered to arrest the individuals named on the list.

 

Intelligence reports reveal that individuals are running online propaganda campaigns using fake Facebook accounts from Chittagong and Khulna. Activists operating from Chittagong are promoting Khulna programs and vice versa. Police have identified the perpetrators and are taking steps to arrest them promptly. 

Notably, August 5 marks the date former PM Sheikh Hasina fled to India in 2024. August 15 marks the death anniversary of former President Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Police anticipate, banned AL and its affiliations may attempt to organize protest programs on these dates. 

‘Police remain on high alert throughout July and August. We are taking a strict stance so that banned organizations cannot operate in the city,’ a KMP Crime Division source said. Authorities are monitoring potential sudden early morning or late-night marches. 

KMP Police Commissioner Mohammad Jahidul Hasan stated that police have taken extensive preparations for both dates. ‘We have increased the number of checkposts and police patrols across the city. Although brief rallies took place previously, there is no threat of sabotage surrounding these two days,’ he assured. 

Regarding social media propaganda, the commissioner noted that the origin of posts is less critical than preventing physical rallies on the streets. ‘Since leaders of banned groups tend to march while officers rest, we have increased patrolling duties during early morning hours,’ he added.
