1 killed, 12 injured including Russian in Natore road crash

A truck helper was killed and at least 12 people, including eight Russian nationals, were injured in a head-on collision between a passenger bus and a cargo truck on the Bonpara-Hatikumrul highway in Gurudaspur upazila on Tuesday night.

The accident occurred around 9:30pm in the Talbaria area.

The deceased was identified as Imon, 22, son of Zahurul Islam of Kholabaria in Natore Sadar upazila. He was working as the truck's helper.

Police, fire service officials and local residents said the truck, which was heading to Dhaka from Natore, collided head-on with a passenger bus travelling from Dhaka to the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant area in Ishwardi.

Among the injured were eight Russian nationals, including four women. Firefighters and local residents rescued the victims and took them to Gurudaspur Upazila Health Complex. Several critically injured passengers were referred to other hospitals for advanced treatment.

The crash caused severe traffic congestion on both sides of the highway for about two hours before the damaged vehicles were removed and traffic partially resumed around 11:00pm.

Officer-in-Charge of Bonpara Highway Police Station Moniruzzaman said the cause of the accident was under investigation and legal action would be taken accordingly.
