A human chain and sit-in programme was held in Rangpur city on Saturday demanding the cancellation of prepaid electricity meters, alleging customer harassment and exploitation.

Organised by the Rangpur Metropolitan Nagorik Committee, the programme began at 12:00 PM in front of the Rangpur Press Club and was attended by leaders and activists from different social, political and professional organisations.

Speakers alleged that prepaid meters are forcing consumers to spend extra money and causing suffering for low and fixed-income people due to the obligation of paying electricity bills in advance.

They also claimed that customers are facing harassment because of various charges and technical complications related to the prepaid metering system.

The speakers further said that introducing prepaid meters without considering public opinion was unjustified, warning of tougher movement programmes if the project is not cancelled immediately.

Among others, Rangpur Metropolitan Nagorik Committee Convener Prof Mojahar Ali, Member Secretary Palash Kanti Nag, Electricity Consumers Forum President Delwar Hossain, metropolitan JASAD leader ABM Mashiur Rahman, Mahfuzur Rahman, Amin Mostazin and freedom fighter Abdus Sattar addressed the programme.
