The government is going to construct second Padma Bridge, said Road Transport and Bridges Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam on Monday.
He made the announcement after a preparatory meeting held at the Secretariat regarding safe travel arrangements ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha.
In reply to a question about whether the second bridge at the Daulatdia-Paturia point would help reduce road accidents, the minister said the plan has already been taken. He added that there are three proposed options for the second Padma Bridge, and the first proposal relates to the route mentioned.
"We are moving forward with the construction of the second Padma Bridge, and a feasibility study has already been completed," he added.
He further said talks are ongoing regarding funding for the project, while other preparatory works are also in progress.
The minister did not provide a specific timeline but confirmed that the government is actively working on the implementation steps, including financial arrangements and technical preparations.
Officials believe that the construction of the second bridge over the Padma River will improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and help minimise road accidents on one of the country's busiest transport corridors.
Further details regarding design, budget, and construction schedule are expected to be announced after final approval of the project plan, the officials maintained.
