Police on Saturday night arrested Dr. Hasibur Rashid, the former Vice-Chancellor of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR), in connection with the high-profile killing of student Abu Sayeed.

The detention took place in Mohammadpur area of the capital following Dr Rashid's conviction and 10-year prison sentence in the case.

Mohammadpur Police Station officer-in-charge (OC), Md. Mezbah Uddin, confirmed the arrest, identifying Dr. Rashid as the prime accused in the murder case.

The OC stated that a police team apprehended the former VC, also known as Dr Hasibur Rashid Bachhu, and further details regarding the operation would be shared soon.

Abu Sayeed, a student of Begum Rokeya University, became a symbol of the anti-discrimination movement after he was killed during a protest.

The subsequent judicial proceedings named the university's top administrator as a key figure responsible for the events leading to the student's death.

Dr Rashid had resigned from his post as Vice-Chancellor on August 9, 2024, four days after the fall of the previous government, amid intense protests and demands from students.
He had remained at large since the court delivered the 10-year sentencing until his capture by law enforcement in Dhaka.
