A Sirajganj court has sentenced Dr. Rayhan Sharif, a lecturer at Sirajganj Medical College (formerly Shaheed M. Monsur Ali Medical College), to 21 years in prison under two sections of the Arms Act for shooting a student.
Judge Iqbal Hossain of Sirajganj Special Tribunal-1 and District and Sessions Judge delivered the verdict on Monday afternoon.
Dr. Rayhan Sharif was a lecturer in the Department of Community Medicine at the college and is the son of retired professor Abdur Razzak.
According to the case details, on March 4, 2024, Dr. Rayhan entered an ongoing examination room on the fourth floor of academic building armed with firearms and sharp weapons to intimidate students.
At one stage, he pulled a pistol from his bag and shot a student, Arafat Amin Tomal. The bullet struck Tomal's right leg, leaving him severely injured. The incident triggered intense student protests demanding justice.
Following the shooting, Sub-Inspector (SI) Wadud Ali of the Sirajganj Sadar Police Station filed the case as the plaintiff.
