Bangladesh Bank (BB) on Monday released new Tk1,000, Tk500 and Tk10 banknotes carrying the signature of newly appointed Governor Md Mostaqur Rahman for the first time.
The notes, issued from the central bank’s Motijheel office, are part of the “Historical and Archaeological Architecture of Bangladesh” series introduced following the July uprising in 2024.
According to a BB press release, the new notes will gradually be issued from other offices of the central bank across the country.
The central bank also said that Tk20, Tk50 and Tk100 notes of the same series, already in circulation, would be released gradually with the new governor’s signature.
Bangladesh Bank said the colour, size, design and security features of the notes would remain unchanged.
All existing paper notes and metallic coins currently in circulation will continue to remain valid and legal tender, the release added.
Officials concerned said the central bank has recently increased the supply of fresh notes in the market to reduce the circulation of torn and damaged currency notes ahead of Eid-ul-Adha.
The shortage of fresh notes emerged after the fall of the Awami League government in August 2024, when the central bank introduced a new note design, replacing images associated with the previous regime with historical and archaeological landmarks of Bangladesh.
Bank officials said commercial banks have been withdrawing large volumes of fresh notes from Bangladesh Bank in recent days to meet growing public demand before Eid.
