PIROJPUR, May 22: Sufficient sacrificial animals are available in the district.
According to District Livestock office sources, cattle such as cows, goats, sheep and buffaloes have been produced at private sector commercial farms and at the seasonal farmer level across the district.
The total demand for sacrificial animals in the district is 21,899, but local production is 27,406, with a surplus of 3,417.
District Livestock Officer (DLO) Dr Tarun Kumar Roy said that more or less in all seven upazilas of the district, sacrificial animals are ready ahead of Eid. No animals need to be imported from other districts; we are self-sufficient to meet local demand, and moreover we are running a surplus of production.
In Pirojpur Sadar, a total of 3,280 cows, 12 buffaloes, 4,500 goats and 45 sheep are ready for sale. In Bhandaria: 1,399 cows, 5 buffaloes, 630 goats. In Mathbaria: 5,869 cows, 542 goats. In Kawkhali: 949 cows, 4 buffaloes, 578 goats. In Nesarabad: 1,856 cows, 3 buffaloes, 754 goats and 17 sheep. In Nazirpur: 3,751 cows, 2,776 goats, 99 sheep. And in Zia Nagar: 2,281 cows, 17 buffaloes, 1,230 goats and 21 sheep.
Sick and unhygienic animals must be prevented from being sold in the district. In this connection, medical camps will be set up at haats along with security measures by the police and local administration. Proper shelter for cattle traders should be prepared, and bank booths to protect against fake bank notes.
