Three members of a family were killed while they were returning home ahead of Eid in Barishal’s Gournadi upazila on Tuesday afternoon.

The deceased were identified as Firoz Mahmud, 37, son of Abdul Hakim, a resident of Uzirpur upazila, his wife Monia Begum and their minor daughter Jannat.

According to locals, the incident occurred around 12:30 PM in Batajor area on the Dhaka-Barishal highway when a Barishal-bound passenger bus rammed into a motorcycle which was standing beside the road due to traffic congestion, leaving all three to die on the spot.

Soon after the incident, enraged locals vandalised the bus. However, the driver and his helper managed to flee the scene.

Gournadi Fire Service Station Officer Md Mizanur Rahman said that the family was believed to have been returning home from Dhaka by motorcycle.

Gournadi Highway Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Md Mohsin said the bus involved in the accident had been seized.

Police were working to restore normal traffic movement and ease congestion on the highway, the OC added.
