RAMGATI, LAXMIPUR, June 3: Alexander Meghna Beach in Ramgati Upazila of Laxmipur, a popular tourist spot on the banks of the Meghna River, is facing growing complaints over syndicate control, overcharging, and mismanagement during the Eid-ul-Azha holidays.
Locals and tourists allege that organised groups control boat services, shops, parking, and other tourist activities, forcing visitors to pay inflated prices and face harassment in several cases. Visitors also reported overcrowding in boats and unsafe practices, raising serious safety concerns.
During Eid holidays, thousands of tourists visit the site daily. However, incidents of alleged harassment, overcharging, and misbehaviour by boat staff and local groups have created panic among visitors. Some tourists also alleged that they were taken mid-river during bad weather and later stranded, requiring rescue operations.
On May 29, several hundred tourists, including women and children, were reportedly stranded on Abdullah Char during sudden adverse weather while on boat trips. They were later rescued in a joint operation by police, coast guard, and naval police.
On May 30 evening, clashes reportedly broke out between tourists and boat staff over fare disputes, leaving at least five visitors injured.
Visitor Md Rubel, who came from Noakhali Sadar's Andarchar area with a group during Eid-ul-Azha, said he would not return again. "Their behaviour is very poor. They are charging excessive fares and even assaulting visitors from distant areas," he said.
Another visitor, Redwan Hossain Imran, said multiple syndicates operate in the area. "There is no security. The riverbank is controlled by musclemen," he added.
Nasima Begum, another tourist, praised the natural beauty but criticised the management. "They charge Tk 100 to Tk 300 for just a 10-minute boat ride. There have also been incidents of physical harassment," she said.
Officer-in-Charge of Ramgati Police Station Liton Dewan said police are maintaining constant vigilance to ensure visitor safety. "A few minor scuffles have occurred. We are investigating complaints of misbehaviour and overcharging and will take necessary action," he said.
Ramgati Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Nilufa Yasmin Nipa said the number of visitors is increasing around Eid and the site is expected to remain crowded throughout the week. "Adequate law enforcement has been deployed for safety. Necessary steps will be taken to make the area more tourism-friendly," she added.
