Three people, including a couple, were killed and another woman was injured when a passenger bus ran over an auto-van after it lost control at Belkuchi upazila of Sirajganj on Friday morning.
The deceased were identified as Fazila Khatun, 45, and her husband Motaleb Sarkar, 55, of Ajgara village of Belkuchi upazila, and auto-van driver Nuru, 45, a resident of Jamtail area. Another passenger, Tamanna Khatun, sustained injuries and was admitted to Belkuchi Upazila Health Complex for treatment.
The accident occurred around 7:00AM in Meghulla Bus Stand area on the Belkuchi-Enayetpur regional road.
Belkuchi Fire Service and Civil Defence Station Officer Shahidur Rahman said the auto-van was heading towards Belkuchi from Enayetpur when its axle broke in the Meghulla area, causing the vehicle to lose control and move into the middle of the road. A speeding Dhaka Express bus coming from the opposite direction then ran over the vehicle.
Fire service personnel, police and local residents jointly carried out the rescue operation and recovered the victims, he added.
Belkuchi Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Imam Zafar confirmed the deaths and said police had taken necessary steps following the incident. Further legal procedures are underway.
