The Cabinet on Thursday approved the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Incentive Scheme Policy 2026, aimed at encouraging expatriate Bangladeshis and other citizens to bring foreign direct investment into the country through a range of incentives.

The approval came at the weekly Cabinet meeting held at the Secretariat and chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

Officials said the new policy has been formulated to attract greater foreign direct investment by encouraging expatriate Bangladeshis, as well as other Bangladeshi citizens, to invest in the country through incentive-based mechanisms.

The government hopes the policy will help increase investment inflows, support economic growth and create new opportunities for business and employment.

During the meeting, the Cabinet also approved the draft of the Bangladesh Medical University (Amendment) Act, 2026.

According to officials, the amendment has been proposed to expand the university's role in healthcare services, medical education and research.

The meeting was informed that revisions to the existing Bangladesh Medical University Act, 1998, are necessary to enable the institution to undertake a wider range of activities and strengthen its operational capacity.

Under the proposed amendment, the university will be empowered to establish both profit-oriented and non-profit companies or organisations. It will also be allowed to acquire shares in such entities and engage in related activities as part of its efforts to expand services and support research and educational initiatives.

The Cabinet approved the draft law to facilitate the required changes to the existing legislation.

Meanwhile, the Cabinet congratulated Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman on his election as President of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Members of the Cabinet praised the achievement, describing it as a significant recognition for Bangladesh on the international stage.

The election of a Bangladeshi diplomat to the prestigious position is expected to further enhance the country's profile in multilateral diplomacy and global affairs.

The decisions were taken during the Cabinet's regular weekly meeting, where a number of policy and legislative matters were reviewed and approved.
